Pluralsight Update Track Videos You Watch Easily for Free JibberJobber Upgrades One week ago we announced the awesome access you now have to my career, job search and soft skill video courses on Pluralsight. Today were announcing the Pluralsight Video Tracker, which is an internal tool on JibberJobber that allows you to keep track of which Jason Alba courses you have watched and get free JibberJobber premium upgrades for each Jason Alba course you finish. Heres a video showing how to access Pluralsight for 30 days, and get additional JibberJobber upgrades: Here are step-by-step instructions on how to take advantage of this very generous access (thank you Pluralsight!) to my videos: First: login to JibberJobber and click the link right under the menu. NOTE: if you close this box, you can still get access to the right page by clicking Videos, directly under the search box. Second: Once you click on that link, youll come to a page with an explanation of what all of this is about. Note the blue box on the right, where you click to get your personal, unique code.  Click that link and youre on your way! Third: The blue box will expand and give you (1) your personal code just copy that and then click the (2) signup button to go to the next page (which will open a new tab).  NOTE: Step 3 says to come back to this page to turn on the tracker well get to that in a minute! Fourth: See how small that form is?  That is IT!  No credit card number, no commitment, no strings.  This is awesome.  Just paste your code in the top box, fill out the form, and then click the button.  If you dont work for a company, dont worry.  Pluralsight wants you to know who they are, and when you land your next job, you can introduce your new team, your boss, etc. to Pluralsight.  You now have your Pluralsight account, and the clock starts to tick on 30 days of unlimited access (which means, all of my courses, and the rest of the 4,000+ courses in the library). Fifth: Notice Step 3 turned into this link.  This takes you to the Pluralsight Video Tracker, where you can see what courses that qualify for  more JibberJobber upgrades, and how to easily report each course you watched. so, click this link. Sixth: Click the button to start the tracker this starts the 30 day counter.  If you sign up for Pluralsight one day, and click this blue button a different day, your days will be off.  No big deal, just do the math in your head, or let us know and well try to adjust it. This counter is internal to JibberJobber, and not coming from Pluralsight.   Seventh: Now that you have clicked that button, you see the tracker below this image I will explain the 6 highlights. This shows how many days you have left, according to when you clicked the Turn on Tracker button.  This is NOT tied directly to Pluralsight, so if you didnt click it the same day you got your Pluralsight account, it might be off. This green progress bar shows you how many Jason Alba courses you have watched.  It does not show how many times you have watched one single course.  Right now I have fifteen courses in the Pluralsight library.  If you watch all fifteen, youll be at 100%.  If you watch only one course, fifteen times you will only be at 1/15.  I wouldnt worry too much about getting to 100%, unless you are keen on watching all of my courses at least once This line shows you how many upgraded days you have received because of courses you have reported, and when you premium expires.  If the math appears to be off, let us know! The left column shows the Jason Alba courses you can click on the title or the link to get to that course.  The order is a kind-of-logical-suggestion, but you can watch in whatever order you want. The eye button is what you click to report that you have completed a course.  Every time you watch a course, click the eye button Note the counter, which shows how many times Ive watched a particular course.  You can see Ive watched the Killer Job Search Strategy course 3 times, the Informational Interviews course 25 times, and the Killer Personal Brand course once.  Each time you click the button the number increments, and you  earn more JibberJobber premium. Of course, we reserve the right to audit any self-reporting.  If you click 30 times today, were guessing you havent watched 30 courses in one day well have a conversation about that.  If you did watch 30 courses, and report them all one on day great.  We simply ask that you be honest. Also, once you click 52 times, your submissions go into a queue that Liz will monitor.  If you really watched the courses, youll still get your upgrades of course. Here are two questions Ive received: A Pluralsight user asked what happens after the 30 days.  Every time you watch a Jason Alba course on Pluralsight, and report it on the JibberJobber Tracker, you get  additional days of JibberJobber premium.  Whether you came to Pluralsight through JibberJobber, or whether your company pays for your account, or whether you have had your own account for years you earn these days. Can I leave discussions on the courses on Pluralsight? Ive been told that yes, you can leave discussions and rankings, even if you are on the 30 day trial.  Feel free to leave anything you want as long as it is honest  I like to answer questions to courses on those discussion boards, as opposed to individual emails. Now, carve out some time even if its 30 minutes each day, and get watching! 30 days will come quickly (but the upgrade on Pluralsight is very reasonable, if you need more time!) Top Twitter Tools to Tweet Talent Today

Top Twitter Tools to Tweet Talent Today Do you want to manage your Twitter efficiently? Certainly everyone wants to build a large audience on the social network. If theres no-one listening to you moaning about the extortionate prices of Chicken McNuggets at 2am, what is the purpose of Twitter?! Thankfully, with the help of these three  essential tools, managing and building an audience whilst operating Twitter is easier than ever. Behold: TweetDeck TweetDeck  is the most popular Twitter application, with 23% market share. Tweetdeck can be used either within a browser, as a Google Chrome app or a desktop app. Tweetdeck  allows you to track in real-time Twitter and filter  updates using custom timelines. Displayed as columns, custom timelines allow you to cut irrelevant  tweets,  follow particular hashtags, trending topics or even lists. You can also track a single users received or sent tweets. Timelines can be filtered  to just include images, or contain  or exclude specific words and terms. You can track a  URL  being shared, then filter  the results to the highest amount  of retweets, or specifically  which verified users promoted the tweet. The filtering options are endless. The ability to manage multiple accounts from within Tweetdeck  is extremely useful for engaging with various audiences quickly and efficiently.  Thats personally my favourite feature of Tweetdeck. Whilst Id recommend Tweetdeck  to users that want  to take the social network  seriously, the columned nature of the application is somewhat overwhelming with information. When actively using Tweetdeck, its hard not to feel like multiple active columns together  creates tweet  chaos. The singular native Twitter feed is far less overwhelming, but  Tweetdecks advantage its easier to track multiple feeds at once. ManageFlitter ManageFlitter is a great way of quickly gaining  followers outside of your community. The tool allows you to curate and grow your Twitter account. ManageFlitter lets you even integrate your Google Plus account with your Twitter account. Over 2.5 million Twitter users have used ManageFlitter. Using ManageFlitter, you  can view a similar Twitter account followers and quickly follow their users to gain an audience with a similar interest. ManageFlitter search  feature is the best part of the tool, as you can schedule tweets when most of your users are online! ManageFlitter offer free and premium accounts, premium being a slightly  expensive, the Business plan priced at $49 a month. The free account at least gives you some access to cleanup daily unfollowers and some ways of growing your account, but this is an application that is truly effective once a payed subscriber. Loading times are also longer for free accounts, which is a poor restriction  put on users. Tweepi Tweepi is  great  at managing the users you follow,  getting rid of dormant followers or unappealing users fast. The application  helps you analyse Twitter followers, which can help you to understand your audience. You can flush out users who you follow who dont yet follow you. You can even force maddening  users to unfollow (that means you, mum). Tweetpi has the ability to extract and analyse personal data from your Twitter account, and apply that information to gain followers of a similar interest.  Tweepi also allows you to analyse multiple Twitter accounts and to establish more valuable connections on  Twitter. Tweepi also offers two payed packages. The $14.99 platinum membership allows you to become more efficient at managing your account. To  further improve your Twitter presence, use these three apps to help raise your recruiter profile.

Dont Be a Know It All No One Will Hire You! - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Dont Be a Know It All No One Will Hire You! - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career He only errs when he thinks he knows what he does not know Socrates One of the worst traits a candidate can exhibit is being a “know it all”.  There’s a huge difference between someone who has healthy self-esteem and someone whos a know it all.  A person with healthy self-esteem has clear knowledge of his strengths and abilities, but  is comfortable knowing he has limitations. People who are more amenable to suggestions and advice tend to be more likable, and typically make better business partners, employees and managers. They don’t need to be an expert on everything. Barb came for coaching because she couldnt decide on a career path. When she attempted to get a job, though undecided about her ultimate career path, she failed to get hired. Barb was suffering from a sense of  helplessness and despair, but she could not take in anything I said. Her approach in getting hired was all wrong because she never matched her accomplishments and achievements from previous work experience to the jobs she was applying for. Hiring managers ignored her resume because it was not obvious to them if she could contribute or add value. At first I empathized with her and tried to help her see her own strengths. I offered suggestions on how she could research companies, learn more about sectors that interested her and get informational interviews with influencers. I also showed her how she could improve her resume and her LinkedIn profile to attract a hiring manager’s attention. Unfortunately she couldnt get motivated to take action to improve her situation. She gave me a blank stare and said, “I dont want to change my resume or my LinkedIn profile.   I’d rather try to see what I can get leaving it the way it is.” Barb was unwilling to explore new strategies even though her old ones had failed. She was unwilling to take any advice and needed to maintain the position that she had all the answers. Barb, Knew it all on one level but knew she needed help on another. Her old strategies were not working but she couldnt adopt knew ones.  She repeated my suggestions back to me as if they were her own and though she requested feedback she couldnt accept any constructive criticism. After our third session, Barb said she didnt want to do the work that I suggested to advance her career. I proposed that we take a break from coaching unless she changed her mind and would be amenable to trying some of the new strategies. Low self-esteem and having aknow it all attitude is a dead end for making strides in building relationships and for making progress in ones career.  Know it alls struggle with co-workers and superiors, have difficulty getting hired and are the most challenging to coach. Since they resist being introspective they limit themselves from having breakthroughs. Introspection usually leads one to recognize that certain qualities attract people and others turn them off. Is it possible to practice building traits that are equated with people who are likable? Can you avoid those signals which get you labeled as a nuisance, difficult person or Know it all?  Focusing on building self-esteem may help. Recognize the Traits of Those Who Possess Healthy Self-Esteem Seeks feedback Expresses gratitude Knows strengths but doesn’t need to share them Recognizes limitations Asks the right questions Seeks to learn from others Accepts other ideas and gives credit Assertive but not aggressive Good listener Principled and ethical Not afraid of failing Can laugh at herself/himself Open to correction Willing to say I don’t know Recognize the Traits of a Know it All Defensive Needs to be right all the time Cant be wrong Projects blame on others Constantly challenges others views Denies making mistakes Rejects suggestions, advice or support Dogmatic, abrupt and a poor listener Needs to be center of attention Fails to recognize  other’s with greater knowledge Insecure Takes credit Lacks empathy Like to hear themselves talk Self-centered and pompous Puts others down Cant give others credit Humility rather than being a know it all, will usually transmit emotional maturity and make you more desirable when applying for jobs. Candidates who know what they know and are able to learn from others become great team players and potential leaders. Hiring managers tell me that the best employees are accountable for their mistakes,  open to suggestions, rapid learners and actively seek ways to improve. They come to work each day ready to make a contribution and seek new knowledge to add value. Being a know it all does not transmit strength but actually can damage your reputation as a desirable candidate. Top talent realizes that the best tactic to get noticed isn’t to know everything but to show your potential for learning anything and using it for the greater good.

Failing Gracefully What You Probably Didnt Know About Successful Startups

Failing Gracefully What You Probably Didnt Know About Successful Startups I have a confession. I had my first job interview yesterday since being self-employed and I loved it. Does the fact that Im ready to go back to a day job mean Im a failure or that my business didnt work out?  Absolutely not. Youll hear a lot of successful people tell you they were a 20 year overnight success.  This means they tried and failed and kept trying many, many times (and for many, many years) before they got to where they are today.  Most of those people probably changed directions at least a few times too.  Check out the below Infographic created by Online MBA about the truth behind successful businesses.  This should make any aspiring or struggling entrepreneur feel just a little bit more normal! This infographic was sent to me compliments of onlinemba.com. What do YOU think about these statistics?  Have you ever tried starting a business?  What happened?  What would you do differently next time?

Whats In A Name The Big O - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Whats In A Name The Big O - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career When someone says The Big “O” it can have many different meanings depending on where in the country you live, what you spend your days doing and where your mind is at the moment. Hey, keep it clean folks, this is a personal branding blog not a, well, you know. (wink, wink) For those of us that live in Chicago, or let’s face it, nearly anywhere these days, The Big “O” might just conjure up thoughts of a little known figure by the name of Oprah. When you think of personal branding this is a personal brand done right. Thinking of her brand, has anyone else noticed that she dropped Winfrey? Do last names last? And her talk show competition, the dancing diva Ellen, has dropped DeGeneres. It appears as if there’s a whole generation of “Madonna’s” running around dropping last names as if one name is all anyone needs. Has using just one name become a new personal branding tactic of the uber-successful woman? Will Martha Stewart soon be going by just Martha? Don’t look now but her blog is already named “The Martha Blog” which looks like she might be ready to jump on this fast-moving train. Are Rachel Ray and Suze Orman getting ready to follow suit? Known for her industry-leading innovation, Oprah has taken it a step further and moved her signature to simply “O”; sayonara p-r-a and h. This is the power of a personal brand done well. These women are more than mere names, or in one case a letter. They are media moguls, investors, actresses, executive producers, multi-millionaires and billionaires and philanthropists. Are all of them all of these things? No. However, their brands are each powerhouses and all of these brands are built on one person which makes it both a personal brand and a business brand. I know this rather well as my name and brand, like these women, is the same. Whats behind the brand Diving into one of these brands, Oprah, shows that it’s more than a brand, it’s a business that has multiple divisions and directions all of which come together with one person, one face and one name. Your experience, education, talent and skills may be vast and great yet your personal branding message brings it all together in a powerful statement that conveys why YOU, the brand, are the best candidate for the job. With clarity comes results. Clarify your personal branding message, communicate it to your network and results will follow. Interview Series - Career Experts - Sharlyn Lauby - HR Bartender CareerMetis.com

Interview Series - Career Experts - Sharlyn Lauby - HR Bartenderâ€" CareerMetis.com In this interview series, we caught up withSharlyn Lauby from HR Bartender who shares her expertise and insights about job search, career change, etc. in today’s marketplace.Tell us a little bit about your companyevalI started in human resources after a car accident left me unable to do my job at the time. You can read all about it here. How did you get started?evalYou can read the story of how I came up with HR Bartender here. What is the best career advice you’ve ever received?Always be networking. I mentioned earlier about the importance of networking.Years ago, I had a boss whose position was eliminated. He really struggled finding a new position because he didn’t have a network. He was a senior executive and figured he didn’t need one. What is the most exciting part of working in this industry? I love that HR is constantly growing and changing, and not just from a compliance standpoint. The way we do business has changed dramatically over the past decade. Technology has a l ot to do with it. HR needs to support the business and change with the times. How do to stay abreast of the industry as an expert? evalI like to learn and set learning goals for myself. What are some of the things that you see job seekers struggle with the most?Networking. Here’s a situation I see a lot: Job seekers forget/ignore their network. Then at some point, they need them Once the job seeker lands a new job, what’s the first thing they do? Yep, stop networking. How should job seekers approach job search today? We’ve already talked about one aspect â€" networking. Another approach that job seekers need to think about, both in the short- and long-term, is their social brand.Organizations are using social media to recruit. They use the internet to post jobs. Whether you’re just entering the workforce or thinking about an encore career, it’s to your advantage to build a social brand. What is one advice you would give someone just out of college today? Constantly improve your business acumen.evalYou will always need it. I honestly cannot think of a single moment in your career where understanding the business won’t be important and valuable. What is one advice you would give someone who is switching careers?Focus on transferrable skills. Not only will it help you identify what you do well, but it will allow you to focus on those skills you enjoy doing. How can job seekers get the most out of LinkedIn?Keep your profile current and make your profile look like people are engaged with your profile. It sounds so easy, but often overlooked. What I mean by current and engaging are things like having a current profile picture, adding accomplishments, etc.Professional sites like LinkedIn are also susceptible to trends such as endorsements, publishing directly to LinkedIn, etc.Unemployment is at the lowest levels, why do you think that is? There are many reasons including Boomers leaving the workforce, fewer younger workers entering the workforce to replace them, the gig economy, etc.I believe unemployment is a complex metric and organizations that try to narrow it down to a single factor might be oversimplifying it. Especially if they’re trying to use only one factor to address their recruiting challenges. What is the biggest trendExploring and test-driving new resources is a big part of the fun. What works for me might not be the best thing for others. I will say that there are many good (and free!) resources on the web today, so job seekers don’t need to spend big bucks to get good information. What is the best way for our audience to reach you?
